Do QR codes expire? Free dynamic codes can, static codes never do
Updated 2026-10-17
Do QR codes expire? Static QR codes never expire. Dynamic (editable) QR codes can stop working if the service behind them ends your free trial or plan. The pattern itself never expires; only the redirect service, or the page it points to, can lapse.
If this already happened to you, see QR code stopped working after a free trial. For what happens when you cancel a paid plan, see what happens to QR codes when you cancel.
Why free dynamic QR codes expire
A dynamic QR code holds a short redirect link run by the service. If the service ends your trial or plan, your printed codes stop reaching your page. What vendors say in their own help pages:
| Service | When the free trial ends |
|---|---|
| QR Code Generator Pro | Dynamic codes made during the 14-day trial are deactivated |
| Uniqode | Dynamic codes are deactivated after the 14-day trial (upgrading the same account restores them) |
Not every free plan works this way. QRCodeChimp says its first 10 dynamic codes stay active indefinitely (with a 1,000-scan monthly cap), and ME-QR’s FAQ says its codes have no time limit (the free plan shows ads). Free means different things at each company, so check before you print.
Static QR codes never expire
A static QR code is just the destination URL drawn as a pattern. No service sits in between, so there is nothing to lapse. As long as the code isn’t damaged and the page exists, it scans years later. Plain black-and-white static codes made on the QRMaple home page are free, need no sign-up, and have no expiry date or scan limit.
Common reasons a QR code “expires”
| Cause | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| A dynamic QR subscription or free trial ended | The service’s notice page shows instead of yours | Renew, or create a new code and reprint |
| The destination page was removed | “Page not found” | Redirect the old address to a new page on that website |
| An expiry date was set on the code | It stops opening after that date | Extend or remove the date in that service’s dashboard |
| A one-time payment or login QR | Expires in minutes by design | Show a fresh code |
How to make QR codes with no expiry
- If the content never changes, use a static code. No service, nothing to lapse.
- If you need to change the destination, avoid subscriptions and trials. QRMaple is a one-time payment, so there is no plan to expire.
- Point to your own website where you can, so you can redirect pages yourself later.
Before printing anything long-lived, ask: is it a subscription or a one-time payment? What happens to the codes when a trial ends? Is there a scan limit?
Want a code to stop on purpose?
For a limited-time campaign, change the destination to an “offer ended” page when it’s over, or turn the code off. In QRMaple, both are in “Edit & stats”. To stop a code automatically on a set date, see how to set an expiration date on a QR code.
FAQ
- Do QR codes expire?
- Static QR codes never expire. Dynamic QR codes can stop working if the service behind them ends your trial or plan; QR Code Generator Pro and Uniqode both say trial dynamic codes are deactivated when the trial ends.
- Do free dynamic QR codes expire?
- It depends on the vendor. Some deactivate them when a free trial ends; others have free plans without a time limit but with caps or ads. Check the vendor’s help pages before printing.
- Does a QR code expire?
- A static QR code does not expire. A dynamic one stops working only if the service running its redirect ends your trial or plan, or an expiry date was set on it.
- Can QR codes expire?
- Yes, dynamic ones can, when a trial or subscription ends or an expiry date passes. Static QR codes cannot expire because they hold the URL itself.
- Why does my QR code say expired?
- The service behind a dynamic code probably ended your trial or plan, or an expiry date was set. The QR pattern itself did not wear out. See the table above for fixes.
- Do QRMaple codes expire?
- No. QRMaple is a one-time purchase, so there is no subscription that can lapse.
