How to change a QR code after it has been printed
Updated 2026-10-17
Short answer: a regular QR code can't be changed after it's printed. You can only change where a QR code points if it was created as an editable (dynamic) QR code in the first place.
If you've printed a menu, flyer, or package and the link changed, here's how it works and what to do.
Why a regular QR code can't be changed
A regular (static) QR code stores the destination URL itself in its pattern. Changing the destination means changing the pattern, which means reprinting.
How editable QR codes work
An editable QR code stores a short redirect link instead of the final URL. When someone scans it, the redirect sends them to wherever you currently point it.
- The printed QR code holds a short redirect link
- You change where that link points in a dashboard
- The same printed QR code now opens the new page
| Regular (static) | Editable (dynamic) | |
|---|---|---|
| Change destination after printing | No (reprint) | Yes |
| Count scans | No | Yes |
| What you need | Any free generator | A service that runs the redirect |
How to change where a QR code goes
You can change the destination of a printed QR code only if it is an editable (dynamic) one. Open your dashboard, choose the code, enter the new URL and save. If you only have a regular code, you can't change where it goes; you can redirect the old URL on the website it belongs to, or make a new editable code and reprint.
Can I change a regular QR code I already printed?
Not the code itself. If the URL inside it is broken, the only fix is on the website that URL belongs to: if it's your own site, set up a redirect from the old address to the new page. For your next print run, switch to an editable QR code.
How to make an editable QR code with QRMaple
- Paste the destination URL in the dashboard and press "Create QR code"
- Download it and print it (high-resolution PNG and SVG are available)
- When the link changes, open "Edit & stats", paste the new URL, and save
The moment you save, every printed copy opens the new destination. No reprinting.
What to check before choosing a service
- Subscription or one-time? With a monthly plan, codes can stop working if you cancel. For print that lives for years, check how you pay.
- Scan limits. Some plans cap how many times a code can be scanned.
- Export. Make sure you can download the list of your codes any time.
QRMaple is a one-time purchase with unlimited codes and unlimited scans, and you can export everything as CSV at any time.
FAQ
- Can I change the link in a regular QR code?
- No. A regular QR code stores the URL itself, so changing it means making a new code and reprinting.
- Do printed copies update right away?
- Yes. With an editable QR code, printed copies open the new destination as soon as you save.
- How many times can I change the destination?
- As many times as you like on QRMaple.
- How do I change where a QR code goes?
- If it is an editable (dynamic) QR code, open its settings in the dashboard, enter the new URL and save. A regular QR code cannot be edited; you would redirect its old URL on your own website or reprint.
- Can I change the destination of a QR code after printing?
- Only if it was created as an editable (dynamic) code. The printed pattern stays the same and opens the new destination as soon as you save.
