Is QR Code Monkey dynamic? No, and what to do about it

Updated 2026-10-17

Short answer: no. QR Code Monkey makes static QR codes only, so the link inside a code can’t be changed after you create it. That is not a flaw. It is how static codes work, and it has a real upside: they never expire.

Vendor details were checked on each company’s own help pages in October 2026. Policies change, so check the vendor’s current terms before you decide.

What QR Code Monkey says

QR Code Monkey explains on its own site that its generator creates static codes that hold all the content you entered. In a static code the destination is written straight into the pattern, so there is no server in the middle that could be switched off or redirected. You can read their explanation on the QR Code Monkey troubleshooting page.

What that means in practice

When QR Code Monkey is a good fit

Choose a static code from a free tool like this when the destination is permanent: your own website’s home page, a Wi-Fi network, a contact card, a plain text note, or a link you control and can redirect on your own server. It is also a good choice for anything you will print once and never touch again.

Static and dynamic, side by side

Static (QR Code Monkey)Dynamic (editable)
Change the link after printingNoYes
Can lapse with a trial or planNoDepends on the vendor
Scan counts from the codeNoYes
Cost to keep it workingNoneDepends on the vendor

Neither column is better in general. A menu that changes every month wants the right column; a link to your company home page is happy in the left one. Many small businesses end up using both: static for things that never change, and a dynamic code for campaigns, menus and anything with a date on it.

If you may need to change the link later

You have a few options:

  1. Point the static code at a page you own. Make the code open a URL on your own website, then change what that page shows or redirects to. This costs nothing but only works if you control the page and its address.
  2. Use a dynamic (editable) code. The code holds a short link that forwards to the current destination, which you can edit at any time. The catch is that it depends on the company running the redirect, so check what happens if you stop paying. See static vs dynamic QR codes and changing a QR code after printing.
  3. Reprint. If the quantity is small, a new static code can be the cheapest answer.

Before you rely on any editable service, ask what happens to your printed codes if you stop paying, whether you can export your list, and whether there is a scan cap. Our guide on QR code expiration walks through those questions, and the free Wi-Fi and business card generators are good examples of codes that should stay static.

Think of it as a one-way choice made at print time. Decide before you print whether the link might ever change.

Where QRMaple fits

QRMaple makes editable (dynamic) QR codes for a one-time payment: $39 Basic, $79 Pro or $119 Premium, with unlimited codes and scans, a 60-day refund, and CSV export of your full list of codes. There is no subscription that can lapse and switch your codes off. To be straight with you, QRMaple is a new service, and its editable codes depend on QRMaple’s servers staying up, just as any dynamic code depends on the company running it. That is why the CSV export exists. QRMaple’s free tool makes plain static black-and-white codes that never expire and can’t be changed; there is no free editable code and no free trial.

QRMaple doesn’t replace QR Code Monkey for design work or free static codes; the two do different jobs.

FAQ

Is QR Code Monkey dynamic or static?
Static. QR Code Monkey says its generator creates static codes that hold all the content you entered.
Can I change the link in a QR Code Monkey code?
No. The link is part of the pattern. To change it you need a new code, or a redirect on the old destination.
Do QR Code Monkey codes expire?
A static code has no service behind it to expire. It works as long as its destination page does.
Can I track scans with QR Code Monkey?
Not from the code itself. Static codes don’t report scans, so use analytics on the destination page.

QR codes you can change after printing

QRMaple is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Make unlimited editable QR codes, track scans, style them, and create them in bulk from CSV.
