QR code scan tracking: see how often and when your codes are scanned
Updated 2026-09-27
To know how often a flyer’s QR code was scanned, or which placement works best, the code has to be one that records scans. A regular QR code can’t tell you anything.
Which QR codes can be tracked
| Static | Dynamic | |
|---|---|---|
| Scan counts | No | Yes |
| By day, hour, weekday | No | Yes |
| Why | It jumps straight to the destination | Scans pass through a redirect that counts them |
What QRMaple shows
- Scans today, in the last 7 days, and the last 30 days, with the change from the previous period
- A daily chart, plus hour-of-day and weekday patterns
- Comparison across codes: sort your list by most scanned
- Device type (phone, tablet, computer)
- CSV export of every scan, for reports
Automated hits such as link previews are left out of the counts. No cookies are used and nothing that identifies the person scanning is stored.
Tip: one code per placement
Even when every code goes to the same page, use a separate code for each placement or flyer to see which one works. Creating many codes is quick with bulk CSV creation.
Combining with Google Analytics
Add UTM parameters to the destination, such as ?utm_source=flyer&utm_medium=qr. QRMaple shows the scans; GA4 shows what visitors did on your site afterward.
Things to keep in mind
- These are scans, not people. The same person scanning twice counts twice.
- Scanning the code and clicking the same short link elsewhere count the same way.
FAQ
- Can I track scans of a regular QR code?
- No. It sends people straight to the destination, so nothing is counted along the way. You need a dynamic QR code.
- Can I see who scanned my code?
- No. QRMaple doesn’t store anything that identifies the person scanning. You see counts and patterns.
- Can I use the scan data in Excel?
- Yes. Export it as CSV from the dashboard; it opens in Excel without garbled characters.
