QR code one-time fee: subscription vs one-time payment vs free with ads
Updated 2026-10-17
Editable (dynamic) QR codes are sold three ways: a subscription, a one-time payment, or a free plan that makes money another way (usually ads). Static codes are free everywhere. Which model fits depends on whether you ever need to change the destination and how long the code stays in use.
Competitor details are from each company’s own pricing and help pages as read on 2026-10-03 (plans and prices) and 2026-10-17 (trial and cancellation behavior). Plans change, so check their current pages before you decide.
The pricing models compared (one-time fee vs subscription)
| Model | What you get | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Free static code | A pattern that holds the URL itself. Works forever with no account. | You can’t change the destination or count scans. |
| Subscription (monthly or annual) | Dynamic codes you can edit, with stats. | Dynamic codes depend on an active plan, and plan limits can cap how many codes you have. |
| One-time payment | Dynamic codes you can edit, with stats, for a single payment. | Check what the plan includes and the refund terms. |
| Free dynamic with ads | Editable codes at no cost. | Scans may pass through an ad or intermediate page. ME-QR’s free plan, for example, shows ads on scan. |
What happens to your codes when you stop paying
Vendors treat a lapse very differently. Each of these is from the vendor’s own help or pricing pages:
- QR Code Generator Pro: after cancelling, codes work to the end of the paid period plus 30 days (view only), then dynamic codes redirect to a service page. Trial codes are deactivated when the trial ends.
- Uniqode: dynamic codes expire if the account is cancelled; data is kept 60 days. Trial codes are deactivated when the trial ends.
- QR TIGER: if a plan expires, the dynamic code stops working; data is kept up to one year per its FAQ.
- Flowcode: existing codes keep scanning but you lose editing; on the Basic plan only your 2 most recent codes stay accessible.
- QRCodeChimp: an expired plan moves to its free plan, where only 10 dynamic codes stay active with a 1,000-scan monthly cap.
- ME-QR: its FAQ says codes keep working after a subscription ends, but ads are shown again.
In every case above, static codes keep working (where the vendor says so). For print that stays up for years, this is the main reason people look for one-time pricing. Full side-by-side: what happens to QR codes when you cancel. Per-vendor pages: QR TIGER, Uniqode, QR Code Generator Pro. For what “lifetime” should mean, read lifetime dynamic QR codes.
Reference points for subscription pricing
| Tool | Entry paid plan | Billing |
|---|---|---|
| QR TIGER | Regular, $7/month: 12 dynamic codes | Monthly or annual ($65/year); higher tiers annual |
| Uniqode | From about $9/month | Annual only |
| QR Code Generator Pro | Starter: 2 dynamic codes, 10,000 scans | Monthly or annual; higher tiers annual |
QR code one-time fee vs subscription: total cost over 1, 3 and 5 years
A one-time fee is paid once; a subscription keeps charging. The table uses QRMaple’s own one-time prices and a generic subscription of $X per month. Put in the real monthly price of the plan you’re considering. Other differences (limits, features) are not included.
| Years in use | Subscription at $X/month | QRMaple Basic ($39 once) | QRMaple Pro ($79 once) | QRMaple Premium ($119 once) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | $X × 12 | $39 | $79 | $119 |
| 3 years | $X × 36 | $39 | $79 | $119 |
| 5 years | $X × 60 | $39 | $79 | $119 |
Example: at $10/month, a subscription costs $120 in year one, $360 over three years and $600 over five. A one-time Basic plan stays at $39. At $5/month the five-year total is $300. Whether the one-time fee wins depends on how long you keep the codes in use; for a short event, a one-month subscription can be cheaper (see below).
What QRMaple includes

| Premium | $119 | Pro plus unlimited projects and team members |
All paid plans can export the full list of codes as CSV. There is no free trial; instead, you get a full refund within 60 days of purchase for any reason. The free generator on the home page makes black-and-white static QR codes with no sign-up. QRMaple does not offer custom domains.
Do you need a dynamic code at all?
- The content never changes (Wi-Fi, contact card, a permanent page): a free static code is enough, and QRMaple’s free generator needs no sign-up.
- You may change the destination or want scan stats: you need a dynamic code. Then compare pricing model, plan limits and what happens when you stop paying.
- You only need it for a short event: a one-month subscription can cost less than a one-time purchase.
When a subscription or free-with-ads tool is the better fit
- You need integrations, landing pages, custom domains or enterprise security. QRMaple does not offer these.
- You want a free trial or a free plan with a few dynamic codes. QRMaple has no free dynamic codes and no trial, only the 60-day refund.
- Your use is short-term.
